Flights from London City to Brest from £79 one way.

Brest’s buzz comes from its status as an international maritime centre, set in a sensational location overlooking the inland sea of the Rade de Brest. It’s very much a split site as the lively commercial port area contrasts with the sober grid-plan of the centre above, softened by green nooks and modern art installations along the new tramway. Modern architecture and resources are to the forefront, as the city had to be almost completely rebuilt after WWII attempts to bomb the German submarine base. The Moulin Blanc pleasure port just to the east of the city is also an important piece of the Brest jigsaw, with one of the most visited attractions in France in Oceanopolis.

Flights from London City to Brive from £79 one way.

An archetypal French country town, prosperous Brive la Gaillarde was settled in Roman times as a key staging post on the road between Paris and Toulouse. Today it serves as a hub for routes criss-crossing the beautiful Massif Central. Corrèze, the Dordogne and the Lot Valley, with their wooded hills and host of delightful villages – many fortified – are all within easy reach. The first French city to shake off Nazi occupation by its own efforts, in 1944, it is today a bustling commercial centre huddled round a medieval core with many picturesque period buildings and a good range of shops.

On June 29, CityJet will commence flights from Amsterdam to Brive.

Flights from London City to Deauville from £79 one way.

James Bond famously played the tables at Deauville’s elegant Grand Casino while Europe’s nobility and the rich and famous patronised the local races. With roots back to 1060, this attractive Norman seaside resort at the heart of the Floral Coast flourished in the turn of the century Belle Epoque as a highly fashionable weekend retreat from Paris – and still has that romantic edge. As adventurous art deco architecture joined art nouveau on its elegant avenues, the town attracted artists, filmmakers and photographers – its rolling surf and broad sandy beaches hosting countless film, TV and fashion shoots. With its wealth of amenities, Deauville caters today for not only the well-heeled but families and sports enthusiasts too.

Flights from London City to Avignon from £99 one way.

Awesome pale stone ramparts, poised dramatically beside the wide Rhône River, encircle ancient Avignon. Broken arches of its famous nursery-rhyme bridge, the Pont d’Avignon where on y danse, still march half-way across the swirling waters. Just over 700 years ago, Avignon was the capital city of the Popes. The grim, massive walls of their Papal Palace, largest Gothic building in the world, rises above the heart of the Old City. Yet despite the town’s intoxicating aura of history, today Avignon’s tree-shaded old lanes and squares teem with energy, creativity and the good life – especially during summer’s month-long arts extravaganza, the Avignon Festival.

Flights from London City to Toulon from £89 one way.

Rising steeply from a fortified natural harbour, Toulon overlooks one of the most beautiful stretches of coast on the French Mediterranean. This spectacular seascape shaped the town’s destiny: a great military port ever since Roman times, it remains the home of the French navy. A busy, vibrant, cosmopolitan town, capital of the Var département and of the western Riviera, Toulon is the gateway into a string of little beach resorts, attractive peninsulas and offshore islands loved by Provençal locals but less well known to outsiders. Toulon’s own waterfront has flowery promenades, a lively leisure port, wide quaysides and sandy beaches.

Flights from London City to Pau from £69 one way.

An unmistakable air of Englishness hovers over this elegant town in the foothills of southwest France’s Pyrénées. Wellington and his troops were among the first Britons to fall for the mild climate of the Béarn region’s ancient capital, swiftly followed by countless others. At times you feel you’re in a Victorian seaside town – but with snow-capped mountains as an enchanting backdrop. Pau is also the birthplace of one of France’s most popular kings, Henri IV, who steadied the country through the Wars of Religion in the 16th century. It’s at once lively and laid back, helped by its large student population.

Flights from London City to Nantes from £79 one way.

Nantes’ strong identity is expressed in exciting architectural variety and a dynamic events scene. Capital of Brittany until WWII, it combines the splendour of its historical legacy with very modern cultural initiatives. The position of the ducal chateau facing a remarkable arts centre in a former biscuit factory across the Loire River illustrates this powerful contrast.

Creativity and confidence ooze from every pore of this great maritime centre which has re-invented itself to meet the challenges of contemporary life. It is now head of the Loire-Atlantique region, but offering all the best of Brittany at the same time.

Flights from Amsterdam to Perpignan from €91 one way.

Flights from Amsterdam AMS to Perpignan PGF with CityJet commence on June 29 2013

Perpignan is a brand-new destination for CityJet. Perpignan is the capital of the Pyrénées-Orientales region, situated about 15km from the sea. Perpignan is home to about 100,000 people, and has two rivers flowing through it; with the Têt to the north, and the Basse through the centre. Half Catalan, half French, Perpignan is Languedoc at its most exotic.

The last major town in Languedoc before the Spanish border, it’s easy to see why the flavour of Perpignan is essentially Catalan. There’s a real mix of cultures in this corner of the region: Catalan, Romany and North African all coexist in this sunny city of palm lined squares. It is located in the deep south of France, with astonishing geography:  on one side there is the Mediterranean coast and on the other side the highest mountains in the French Pyrénées.
