Shamrock Rovers set off on their trip to Italy this morning courtesy of CityJet as they go to play the second leg of the Europa league qualifying fixture against footballing giants Juventus.  We caught up with the team at Dublin airport as they boarded the specially chartered aircraft.

The Irish team enjoyed one of the biggest nights in their history last week when Juve came to the Tallaght stadium in Dublin. Almost 6000 home fans packed the stadium to watch the team do themselves proud against a superior opposition. Although the Rovers lost the tie 2 – 0 they know that an early goal in Modena could change everything. But, whatever the result, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for everyone at the club and the fans.  “Tomorrows game is a massive occasion, its something you look forward to as a kid, to play against the biggest teams” explains striker Gary Twigg.

The Rovers manager Michael O’Neill says the teams are enjoying the Europa Campaign “It’s a great experience for the club, its quiet a young side so the whole European campaign has been an important experience. The lads now have the chance to play against one of the greatest clubs and it’s sure to be a very enjoyable trip”. Michael praised the “smoothness” of the CityJet charter experience saying that flying direct ensures the team are in a good frame of mind which “is a huge bonus to us”.

The club has come along way after being on the verge of bankruptcy just 5 years ago. Now owned by the fans, the clubs chairman Jonathan Roche explains the benefits of the system for the club “people actually feel a sense of ownership, everybody feels part of it and that they have a say in the football club….What our club suffered from before was ownership by one person or 2 or 3 people. Now the clubs destiny is in the hands of the fans so we can have no complaints”.

Shamrock Rovers face Juventus tomorrow night with coverage from 730pm BST on RTE two and RTE.ie.
