What's happening July/August in Venice No trip to Venice is complete without a visit to one of the back-street bàcari, the small bars where locals pop in for a glass of wine and a snack. The beautiful 19th-century Cantinone Già Schiavi bàcaro (Fondamenta Nani, Dorsoduro 992; tel +39(0)41 523 00 34) is opposite the squero (gondola repair shop) of San Trovaso.

ICECREAM
GELATERIA ALASKA SANTA CROCE 1159
| Although its gaudy façade gives it an unprepossessing appearance, this stall sells what is often considered to be the best ice cream in Venice. The house specialities include ginger and peach delicacies, served in a very welcoming atmosphere.
|
GELATERIA MILLEVOGLIE SAN POLO 3033/34 TEL. +39 0 41 52 44 667
| Excellent ice cream that can only be eaten while standing. Many flavours to choose from and a very good quality to price ratio. It also offers delicious pizzas.
|
GELATERIA NICO DORSODURO, 922-ZATTERE TEL. +39 0 41 52 25 293
| This ice-cream parlour has an excellent reputation with the local population. The enormous, overflowing ice creams are to be tasted on the terrace while enjoying the view over Guidecca. The prices can easily become consequential, but the flavours and the charm of the location make it all worthwhile.

KNOWLEDGE
The Bridge of Sighs joins the Doge's Palace to the New Prisons. Built in 1602, it got its name from the idea that the condemned prisoners would let out a sigh at their final view here of beautiful Venice and the island of San Giorgio Maggiore on their way to prison. In the Baroque style, the bridge is built of marble and white Istrian stone. Two windows covered with stone grills are on each side of the bridge.
SECRETS
Torcello Island appears almost deserted and it is difficult to believe that, between the seventh and 13th centuries, it was home to a thriving community of 30,000, who prospered from the wool and salt trade. The town's decline began in the 14th century, when silt from the rivers turned the waterways around the island into swampland and brought malaria to the community. A visit to this ghost town provides a fascinating glimpse into the early beginnings and architecture of the Venetian lagoons. The main square can be reached by crossing the Devil's Bridge, the only medieval bridge remaining in Venice, allegedly built by the devil in a single night.
