What's happening - September/October in Manchester If you fancy an excellent curry, head to Moon Restaurant at 450 Wilmslow Road. Feast on dishes that are spicy but not fiery and prepared from fresh, fragrant ingredients. It's a proper curry house with sitar music and pictures of the Taj Mahal that light up. And the food is delicious. The chicken Karahi deserves a mention - perfect with a Moon pashwari naan, which is crisp and balanced with coconut. www.moonrestaurant.co.uk

Closing The Deal GAUCHO 2A ST MARY'S STREET TEL. 0161 833 4333
| Decked in cowhide, chandeliers and black glass, there are few clues that this Argentine restaurant used to be a Methodist chapel. Take a moment, though, and you'll spot a large white organ and acres of ornate coving overhead. Voted the city's best restaurant time and again, the elegant surroundings complement the south American menu. Specialising in steak, waiters show off the cuts on offer. Served simply with sauce and salad, the meat is a meal in itself, although ceviches - raw prawns in lime, chilli and coconut-are on offer too. The wine list is exceptional.

KNOWLEDGE
Manchester's museum of urban life, Urbis, is hosting an exhibition of new artwork from New York - State of the Art: New York - until 6 September (www.urbis.org.uk). Sixteen artists feature in the show, which aims to illustrate the creative connection between the UK and US. A specially commissioned public work by street artist, Leon Reid IV, is set to be a highlight.
To the north of the city centre, Prestwich offers two museums that showcase the city's diverse heritage - The Jewish Museum (www.manchesterjewishmuesum.com) and Irish World Heritage Centre (www.iwhc.com). After a fix of culture, why not grab a pizza at local chain, Croma, before taking in the fields and architecture of Heaton Park?
Manchester's Arndale shopping centre (www.. manchesterarndale.com) is defying the credit crunch by opening even more desirable stores along its aisles. Peacocks, Top Shop, All Saints and Urban Outfitters lure in the young and trendy, but there's plenty to appeal to any age of wallet, with recent arrivals such as the Apple and Disney stores.
SECRETS
Manchester has a thriving craft scene. Galleries such as Islington Mill and Rogue Artists Studios present new ceramics and jewellery, but Manchester Craft and Design Centre at 17 Oak Street (www.craftanddesign.com) is your best bet for a comprehensive introduction.
