CityJet destination guide Luxembourg

What's happening September/October in Luxembourg  The new Moselle grape harvest is celebrated with a splendid folklore procession at the fête du Raisin et du vin, 10-12 September in Grevenmacher in eastern Luxembourg, on the left bank of the moselle river. In the south-east of the country, 1290 hectares of vines are grown including Auxerrois blanc, Riesling and Pinot noir. Luxembourg wines in general have been described as lighter-style alsace wine but are not very often found outside Luxembourg or neighbouring Belgium. Sparkling wines (Crémant de Luxembourg) make up a significant element of the production. www.grevemacher.org

RESTAURANTS

With Friends
BACCHUS
32 RUE DU MARCHÉ AUX HERBES
TEL. 47 13 97

This sizeable Italian restaurant virtually opposite the Grand Duke's Palace works hard to maintain its reputation for fun and affordable dining. It has a great indoor terrace, outrageously confident and flirtatious waiters, and caters for medium to large-sized groups. In short, you'll find affordable fun in the city centre.

Entertaining a Client
LA FOURCHETTE A DROITE
5 AVENUE MONTEREY
TEL. 22 13 60

Located in the heart of the city on the Place d'Armes, La Fourchette has a reliable reputation for quality French food and excellent service. Food sourced from local artisans with seasonal variation makes for an interesting and enjoyable experience each time you return.

Closing The Deal
LA TABLE DES GUILLOUX
17-19 RUE DE LA RÉSISTANCE, SCHOUWEILER
TEL. 37 00 08

The second Luxembourg restaurant to win two Michelin stars, this charmingly rustic venue is well worth the 10-minute drive out of town. And the €100+ per head average price is worth every cent. The chef and sommelier, who are both from Brittany, will tantalise and reward your palate at every turn. It's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

BARS

Style
APOTECA
12 RUE DE LA BOUCHERIE
TEL. 26 73 77

This atmospheric bar-restaurant is buried in the casemates (tunnels) of the old town. Very popular with the professional after-work crowd, Wednesday's free "apéro" nibbles bring them out in droves. Dress smart, not because there is a dress code, but to make sure you don't feel out of place among the chic clientele.

Relax
SCOTT'S BAR
4 BISSERWEE TEL. 22 64 75

An institution in Luxembourg, sitting on the bridge in the Grund quarter, Scott's enjoys one of the finest views in the city from its terrace. The varied clientele gets younger and louder as the evening progresses.

This is the place to stay if you're working at one of the airport business centres. Comfortable without being opulent, though all rooms have two double beds, the service is reliable and attentive. The hotel offers 24-hour room service and internet access. There's a good restaurant and piano bar and a lime tree fringed terrace to wind down in.

Bespoke
SOFITEL LUXEMBOURG EUROPE
6 RUE DU FORT NIEDERGRUENEWALD
TEL. 43 77 61

As you step into the stunning five-storey atrium of the Sofitel Luxembourg Europe, you know you've made the right decision. Just as handy for the airport as it is for the centre of the city, the hotel is well established among the business and EC communities. The greenery flowing from the balconies gives a refined feel to the hotel and its 109 rooms. Attentive service, great food in the award-winning Italian restaurant, the Havana Lounge bar, seven conference rooms and one meeting room plus a peaceful location are some of the top-class facilities on offer.

KNOWLEDGE

The Modele modeles exhibition at the Musée National d'Histoire et d'Art is on until the end of June (www.mnha.public.lu). A contemporary take on the art of the portrait photo, the exhibition features the work of several European photographers and is part of European Photography Month-a series of events across Europe.

SECRETS

Getting home after a night on the town in Luxembourg could not be easier. Not only are there free night buses on a number of routes, but if you want more flexibility, the Nightrider bus service allows you to call up a minibus to take you home-a bit like a taxi-but a lot cheaper (www.nightrider.lu). Subsidised by the government, it's €10 for a single journey anywhere in the city and €15 return.
