It's the grand finale to the Edinburgh International Festival and a fitting climax to three weeks of cultural hedonism that is the Edinburgh Festival. Join the Scottish Chamber Orcherstra for a rousing night of some of the most famous film music. RESTAURANTS
With Friends KWEILIN 19 DUNDAS STREET TEL. 0131 557 1875
| Deftly carved vegetable animals guard the intimate side room of this smart New Town Cantonese restaurant. They are a testament to the chefs' knife-handling abilities. However, it is the crispy duck pancakes that are the signature dish of Kweilin's authentic menu.
Entertaining a Client IGGS 15 JEFFREY STREET TEL. 0131 557 8184
| Calm and opulent, Iggs demonstrates the formal and creative side of modern Spanish cuisine. The Scottish influences are eminently suitable-a neep and thyme purée accompanying the marinated pigeon breast is a stroke of genius, while locally sourced seafood and game ensure that the menu is fresh. Yet it is the underlying Iberian passion and spice which raise the bar here. Service is knowledgeable and discreet and the well-chosen wine list lets you explore less usual Spanish wines. A secluded rear area offers larger parties a degree of privacy.

Closing The Deal THE VINTNERS ROOMS THE VAULTS, 87 GILES STREET, LEITH TEL. 0131 554 6767
| The history of these former wine auction rooms is reflected in this fine-dining restaurant's impeccable Franco-Scottish menu. Exquisite 18th-century plasterwork and a candlelit ambience create the feeling this has been a place to strike deals over long lunches and good wines.

BARS
Style FORTH FLOOR BAR 30 ST ANDREW SQUARE TEL. 0131 524 8350
| The bar on Harvey Nichols' fourth floor is an ab-fab kind of place for cocktails. Views down to the Firth of Forth and across rooftops to the spot-lit castle at night only add to the exclusive ambience. Enter by the side door on Multrees Walk when the store has closed.
Relax THE BOW BAR 80 WEST BOW TEL. 0131 226 7667
| The place for a perfect pint of strong Scottish beer with an extensive choice of whisky to follow. This traditional pub in the heart of the Old Town has a reassuring bustle to it, while the staff take great pride in their knowledge.
HOTELS
Value JURYS INN 43 JEFFREY STREET TEL. 0131 200 3300
| Using a refurbished modern office building on the edge of the Old Town makes for a gaunt exterior. Looking out from the comfortable uniform interior, however, provides a very handy retreat. It's next to Waverley station and equally convenient for Old and New Town destinations.
Business PARLIAMENT HOUSE HOTEL 15 CALTON HILL TEL. 0131 478 4000
| Named when it was thought the Scottish Parliament would be in the nearby former Royal High School, this affordable establishment provides a traditional Scottish welcome in a tastefully modern environment. Minutes from the Princes Street shopping area with views over to the River Forth, there is also a meeting room with boardroom facilities.
Bespoke MALMAISON EDINBURGH 1 TOWER PLACE, LEITH TEL. 0131 468 5000
| This ex-seaman's mission near Leith docks carries all Malmaison's trademark qualities: individually-designed rooms, luxury extras and fast internet access. A variety of rooms are equipped for business meetings, while the restaurant and bar are worth visiting. The city centre is a 15-minute taxi journey away.

KNOWLEDGE
Escape the city's bustle and go up to Arthur's Seat (www.edinburghguide.com/parks). It is not quite the Highlands but you can lose sight of the city in its hidden valleys or climb to the top for a great panoramic view of Edinburgh. If time presses, take a taxi halfway up to Dunsapie Loch.
Outside the Edinburgh Fringe the best place in Edinburgh to see live stand-up comedy is The Stand Comedy Club (www.thestand.co.uk), Scotland's premier comedy venue. Shows are nightly at 8.30pm and the bar is open late.
SECRETS
The UK's first traffic cones were manufactured in Edinburgh in 1958 at the North British Rubber Company's Castle Mills plant in Fountainbridge. The cones replaced red lantern paraffin burners during construction of the Preston bypass.
